Method

  1. 1Pressure-cook 150 g chana dal with turmeric until soft but not mushy.
  2. 2Stir in salt, sugar and a little chilli powder and keep warm.
  3. 3Heat ghee and fry the coconut slivers until golden, then set aside.
  4. 4In the same ghee crackle cumin, bay leaf, cardamom, cloves and dried red chilli.
  5. 5Add asafoetida and let it sizzle.
  6. 6Pour the tempering into the dal along with raisins and simmer 5 minutes.
  7. 7Scatter the fried coconut over the top and serve hot with luchi.
