  1. 1Rinse 150 g toor dal well.
  2. 2Pressure-cook it with turmeric and enough water until very soft.
  3. 3Whisk the dal smooth and loosen with hot water to a pourable consistency.
  4. 4Season with salt and a small piece of jaggery and simmer briefly.
  5. 5Heat oil and crackle cumin seeds and asafoetida.
  6. 6Pour the tempering over the dal.
  7. 7Serve hot over plain rice with a drizzle of oil.
